Nostalgia: Whatever Happened To … The San Francisco Spiders?

In the fall of 1995, Spider fever hit San Francisco!

Well, not really.

But there were a bunch of billboards alongside major freeways with the Spiders’ logo, which was basically the Kool-Aid guy after he went homeless, got skinny and became addicted to crack.

The Spiders were an expansion team in the International Hockey League, a league that existed from 1945 to 2001. With teams such as the Sarnia Sailors, Long Beach Ice Dogs, Minnesota Moose, Indianapolis Ice and our personal favorite, the Toledo Goaldiggers, it’s hard to figure out how the IHL lasted almost 60 years.

Unfortunately, the San Francisco Spiders lasted about 1/56th as long. At the end of their only season (which they obviously finished in last place), they had to disband the team due to poor attendance at Daly City’s Cow Palace.

Yes, shockingly, people did not want to go to Daly City to see pretend hockey.

I totally remember going to a Spiders game as a kid, and even when I was only 12 I still remember thinking how pathetic they were. Good times!

Do some research before you post your opinions as fact. The Spiders had a winning record and made the playoffs at season’s end. They were last in their four team southern division, but still wound up with more points than the Ft. Wayne Komets, one of the most storied and longest lasting franchises in minor league hockey. The final joke’s on you; the Spiders game worn jerseys are considered by many to be one of the most highly sought after jerseys in hockey history, with prices in the thousands of dollars.

    James–

Thanks for the comment. I’m rereading my post and I don’t see any opinions that I posted as fact. They finished in last place in their division. They disbanded after one season. Attendance was poor.

Cool tidbit about the jerseys though; they certainly have one of the most memorable logos in Bay Area history.

Thanks again for the comment. My hockey knowledge is admittedly less than stellar.

I know I’m late to the party on this post, but I actually paid American money to see the Spiders play. But where? At the Cow Palace, wasn’t it?
